HVAHA
PET EXPO

 |
This summer, the Hudson
Valley Arabian Horse Association helped out a good
cause while also spreading the word about our
wonderful breed. On June 26th, a group of dedicated
animal lovers in Dutchess County, NY, including
HVAHA’s president, Arlene Westerlund, held a Pet
Expo as a fund raising event to help kick off the
Safe Haven Animal Shelter and Wildlife Center. Safe
Haven will eventually provide not only a shelter for
homeless animals, but also a center where the public
can bring sick, injured, and orphaned wildlife.
In order to support Safe Haven in its efforts, and
to create some awareness about Arabian horses in the
region, HVAHA donated a large gift basket to be
raffled off to raise funds for Safe Haven, and set
up a table full of information about Arabians. The
table was manned and beautifully presented by our
recording secretary and web master, Tammy Ferin.
Tammy not only handed out information on the Arabian
horse and about our club, but also distributed
pictures of Arabians for the kids in the crowd to
color, and HVAHA buttons that she made. Lots of
potential new horse people stopped by to chat and to
ask questions about Arabians.
The fun-filled day featured a canine parade, turtle
races, falconry demonstrations, pony rides, games,
vendors, food, ice cream, and the raffle. It was a
great opportunity to show off our horses to the
animal loving world, and helping out a great cause
made it all the more worthwhile. This is a great
outreach program for other clubs to utilize. I hope
all clubs will make similar efforts.
